Bu sıralar çoğunuz gibi evdeyim. Evde yapılacaklar listemde uzun süredir yer alan bir işin üzerini çizme vakti geldi. Size bahsetmek istediğim bir kutu set var elimde. 18 Ekim 2019 tarihinde Palmetto Records etiketiyle yayınlanmış bir kutu set bu. Üzerinde Fred Hersch Trio 10 Years/ 6 Disc yazıyor. Bu tarihi toplama albüm defalarca Grammy aboneliği olan ama bir şekilde ödüle layık görülmemiş yaşayan en değerli piyanistlerden biri olan Fred Hersch’ün John Hebert ve Eric McPherson ile 10 yıllık süreçte kayda alınan müzikal anları içeriyor. Albümün kitapçığında Ted Gioia yüz yılı aşkın hayatımızda olan cazın, bugüne veya geleceğe yönelik mi bir form alması gerekliliği ya da geçmişin zengin mirasına sıkı sıkıya sarılma sorunsalını ele almış. Her iki durumunda kendi içinde olumlu-olumsuz yönleri ve kaygıları var. Demodeleşme, döneminde anlaşılamama, tekrara düşme yada geçmiş işleri kopyalama gibi. Fred Hersch, bu ölümcül açmazı İngilizce isimleriyle "3 i" kuralı integrity, immediacy, involvement yani (bütünlük, dolaysızlık ve ilgi) formülasyonunu uygulayarak paradokslara karşı gelen bir başarıyla kıragelen piyanistlerin başında geliyor.

Fred Hersch yaklaşık 25 senelik kariyeri boyunca iki basçı ve üç davulcuyla çalışmış. 90’ların sonunda Drew Gress ve davulcu Tom Rainey ile yola çıkmışlar. Ardından 2005’de Gress yerini John Hebert’e bırakmış. Nasheet Waits bir hafta boyunca Vanguard’da çalacakları konsere katılamamış. O dönemde Paul Motian geçici süreyle sahnedeymiş. Bu olayın ardından Hebert, sürekli davulcu olarak McPherson’ı önermiş. O dönemlerde John ve Eric bir süredir beraber çalışıyorlardı ve 2007’de Andrew Hill hayatını kaybetmeden hemen önce Hill’in rhythm section’ları için ter döküyorlardı. Saydığım isimlerin her biri benim için müzikçalarımda dönmekte olan müziğin enfes olacağı hususunda sağlam referanslar.

Teşbihte hata olmaz; piyano üçlüsü kavramının Rönesansı ya da başka bir tabirle doruğunu Keith Jarrett Trio kabul edersek Fred Hersch Trio da aynı seviye keyif alabileceğiniz bir piyano üçlüsü ziyafeti ihtiva eder. Doğaçlamanın bu denli dengeli ve samimi olduğu çok az müzik dinledik.

Kutu sette yer alan albümler:  2010’da yayınlanan WHIRL albümü, 2012’de yayınlanan ALIVE AT THE VANGUARD, 2014’de yayınlanan FLOATING, 2016’da yayınlanan SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE VANGUARD ve 2018’de yayınlanan LIVE IN EUROPE.

Basçı Eric McPherson, cazın tam içine doğmuş bir şanslı. Büyük babası efsane basçı Richard Davis hatta ismini bile pek çok caz müzisyeniyle arkadaş olan annesi, avant-jazz ikonu Eric Dolphy’den esinlenerek vermiş. Gerisi de suyun akışı gibi akmış gitmiş. Andrew Hill, Pharoah Sanders, eğitmeni Jackie McLean, Greg Osby, Jason Moran çalıştığı isimlerden bazıları.

New Orleans’lı basçı John Hebert ise aralarında Lee Konitz, Andrew Hill, Maria Schneider, Toots Theilemans, John Abercrombie, Tomasz Stanko gibi pek çok isimle çalışma fırsatı bulmuş hassasiyetle dinlenilmesi gereken bir müzisyen.

Albümler konser salonlarında ve kulüplerde icra edildikleri şekilde kayda alınmış, bu bize mekan, zaman, performans algısı kazandıran bir perspektif sunuyor. Performans sırasında kayda alındıklarını bilmedikleri anlar olmuş ve kayda alındıkların bildikleri zamanlar da olmuş. Bu iki durum sırasındaki doğallıkları ve seviye olarak benzeş performansları grubun gösterişden uzak oluşlarının, içtenliğinin göstergesi olarak algılanabilir. Günümüz müziğinde gerçek olabilmenin değerini hepimiz biliyoruz. Hal böyle olunca bir müziksever olarak benim samimiyetinden şüphe duymayacağım güzel müzikler nesiller boyu elimin altında ve kulağımda yer edebilecek bir formda arşivimde yerini alıyor.  

Albümün kitapçığında Hersch’ün her albüm için ayrı ayrı aldığı mini notlar, göndermeler ve albümü daha iyi anlayabilmemiz için kendi hayatından ve performanslarında verdiği örnekler yer alıyor. Bir iki örnek vereyim, devamını merak ederseniz albümü satın alarak kendiniz okuyabilirsiniz. 2010 tarihli Whirl albümü için yazdığı notlarda bu albüm kayıda alınmadan bir hafta önce Drew Gress ve Paul Motian ile The Village Vanguard’da çaldıklarını ve albümde yer alan “Blue Midnight” parçasını bizzat Motian’dan öğrendiğini yazıyor. Sanatçıyla bağ kurabilmek için bu tip notları çok önemsiyorum. Fiziksel kopya satın almak yada sanatçının tavsiye ettiği mecralardan albüm satın alarak siz de severek dinlediğiniz sanatçılara destek olabilirsiniz.

I am at home now, like most of you. It's time to highlight a long-standing work on my to-do list when i m home. I have a box set that in my hand that I’d like  to inform you. This is a box set released on October 18th, 2019 from the Palmetto Records. The name of the album is Fred Hersch Trio writes 10 Years / 6 Discs. It includes the musical moments of Fred Hersch recorded with John Hebert and Eric McPherson over a 10-years period. In the booklet of the album, Ted Gioia emphasizes a problem about the jazz which has been in our lives for over a hundred years, whether it should take a form for today or for the future or the rich heritage of the past. In both cases, they have positive and negative aspects and concerns. Such as being old fashion, not being understood on time, falling back or copying past jobs. Fred Hersch, has solves this fatal dilemma with a formula of integrity, immediacy, involvement…

During his nearly 25-year career, Fred Hersch has worked with 2 bassists and 3 drummers. He started working with Drew Gress and drummer Tom Rainey in the late 90s. Then in 2005 he left it to John Hebert instead of Gress. Then Nasheet Waits replaced by Tom Rainey. Nasheet Waits was not available for a weeklong engagement at the Vanguard. After a while Hebert suggested McPherson when he wanted to part ways with excuse for his intensity. Just before Andrew Hill died in 2007, they were sweating for the rhythm section of Hill’s. Every one of the names that i ve mentioned has strong references for me as a music lover.

I don’t know if its right or wrong but If we accept the Keith Jarrett Trio, accept Keith Jarret Trio as The Renaissance or top form of the trio music, Fred Hersch Trio would probably the same level maybe more. You would probably listen to very few improvised music  as sincere and humble as Fred Hersch Trio.

Box Set includes 6 Discs; WHIRL released in 2010 , ALIVE AT THE VANGUARD released in 2012, FLOATING released in 2014, SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE VANGUARD released in 2016 and LIVE IN EUROPE released in 2018.

Eric McPherson is a fortunate musician born into jazz. His grandfather was legendary bassist Richard Davis and his mother who is a friend of many jazz musicians, a dancer-choreographer has given his name to inspired by the avant-jazz icon Eric Dolphy. The flow has gone like a flow of water. Andrew Hill, Pharoah Sanders, his instructor Jackie McLean, Greg Osby, Jason Moran were among the names he worked with.

New Orleans born bassist John Hebert is a musician who needs to listen with sensitivity and carrefully, who has had the opportunity to work with jazz heroes of mine such as Lee Konitz, Andrew Hill, Maria Schneider, Toots Theilemans, John Abercrombie, Tomasz Stanko etc.

The albums were recorded as they were performed in concert halls and clubs, which gives us a perspective that gives space, time, performance perception. There were also times when they did not know that the record was being recorded and that they were recorded. The naturalness of these two situations and their similar performance in terms of level can be perceived as an indication that the group is far from unpretentious. We all know the value of being real in today's music. In this case as a music lover, I do not doubt  to add this sincerity and good music to my collection that will be with me till the end of my life.

In the booklet, there are some mini notes for each album by Hersch himself. Memories, little anecdots about his life and performances so that we can better understand the album. Let me give you a couple of examples, When you will read it i m sure you will purchase this box set no matter how. The week before he recorded the album Whirl he played a week with Drew Gress and Paul Motian at The Vanguard and  And he learned the tune ”Blue Midnight" in the album by Paul Motion himself. I give great importance to these clue notes to connect with the artist to understand how they create their music. You can support the artists you love listening to by purchasing albums from their recommended channels (bandcamp etc), their own web stores or buy physical copies. We should support them as much as we can.

Great opportunity to listen to music at home. Stay at home, stay with music.
